Modeling and Visualization of architecture

Hello dear reader of XR Magazine, my name is Mark Paauwe. As co-working president of Dragon1 Inc., I am busy with awareness workshops, coaching & training in the field of architecture for clients such as board members, managers and architects. Also, I am involved in reviewing and development of architectures.

A returning subject in all my work is modeling and visualizing architectures. This goes especially for modeling and visualizing enterprise architecture, business architecture, information architecture, security architecture and technical architecture. For example, a blueprint showing a function model related to an information model so people are able to design the TO-BE information provisioning of an enterprise. Another example is an artist impression of business/IT Alignment showing how the self-service customer is centric within an enterprise for the business, information provisioning and IT-Infrastructure. These are all examples of complex issues and concerns for stakeholders where visualizations are key to clear communication of insight and overview of coherence and interdependencies of building blocks and principles.

Too often I find the quality of models and visualizations being very, very low.

You will probably think: How do you measure the quality of visualizations of architectural models, how bad is it anyway the quality being low and how can one improve the quality of visualizations? Exactly these questions are to be answered in the articles and presentations by me and other authors for this section of the e-magazine.

One of the things I am concerned with is that architecture is not enough to present at boardroom level. It is my opinion that is it necessary architecture is a factor of higher importance at boardroom level. Improved quality of models and visualizations will contribute to this. Enterprise architecture should be used more as an instrument for controlling the quality of complex strategic changes and large-scale projects by boardroom members and executives. This will ensure that innovations and improvements to enterprises will be of higher quality. A change in the enterprise consisting of more durable solutions, making room for profitable and sustainable business, is what almost every executive wants.

The practice nowadays is that architectural studies are often executed just before starting up a project, or even during the realization phase. But then is often too late for architecture to be effectively prescriptive instead of being descriptive, and thus being of less impact and usage.

As editor of XR-magazine I want to contribute to the e-magazine by ensuring that enough articles and presentations on the subject of modeling and visualizing of architecture will appear. The "Way of Representing" of the open method Dragon1 will be subject to some articles I will write myself. Next to this, and to be without prejudice, I will free the stage for all other visions, opinions and methods of modeling and visualizing architecture, such as Archimate and Togaf. You as a reader should be able to decide yourself what you find is best, and therefore you have to present with all there is to know.

Next to my work I am also busy developing and renewing Dragon1, an open method for enterprise architecting. This method consists of a way of thinking, a way of working, a way of representing and tools. From the practical use of this method, articles will appear in this e-magazine

At the Radboud University of Nijmegen, under the supervision of prof. Daan Rijsenbrij and prof. Erik Proper, I am carrying out a Ph.D./Research Arches2011 (Architecting Enterprises Scientifically). Here I am defining a scientific fundament underneath the method. From this exercise popular versions of scientific articles will appear at the e-mag XR-magazine.

Every month I try to get an article published in this e-magazine on the subject modeling and visualizing of architectures. But because I am a novice editor, I need everyone's help. With this a request to everyone for writing, searching and sending articles on modeling and visualizing architectures.

This year I am looking articles on the following subjects:

  • Vision and opinions on modeling and/or visualizing architectures
  • Architecture visualizations in the boardroom
  • Examples of artist impressions and blueprints in practice
  • Examples of visualization: Do's and Don't's

The scope of the articles may vary from enterprise architecture to software architecture.

Each article should, if possible, deal with a best practice or case.

Also I am interested in articles about modeling and visualizing building architecture, city plan, large-scale projects and landscape architecture. As an enterprise architect, I want to learn from this.

The minimum page count of articles is 2 pages of clear text and 2 pages of 2, 3 of 4 readable images.

The articles can be mailed to me in Dutch, but preferably in English.

Look for more rules on writing articles elsewhere on this site. I trust the articles on modeling and visualization of architecture will inspire and motivate you to achieve a higher quality yourself. Have fun reading and writing the articles and presentations of XR-magazine.
